To … or any other landlubber who finds this letter,
I decided to take a swim out in the ocean. Don't worry, I avoided the jellyfish this time. But unfortunately I found some sharks instead. Now I'm stranded on some island and the sharks are circling and it's even more boring than land usually is because there's no one to talk to but seagulls. I think we're making a connection. Maybe it's the sun, but I think this one in particular really gets me.
Anyway, I doubt this will ever reach you, but if it does I hope you'll come find me... I won't be going anywhere soon.
-Mel
P.S. Please don't tell Lusina - I've got ways of contacting her if it gets REALLY dire. Thanks. See you soon. Hopefully.

Pixie Goblet
Growes freely in the Bellian Moor. Dew from the caps is drunk to grant the goodwill of fae. Wherein cooked properly hath a nutty flavor.
Sward Shards
Growes particularly well in the Botanical garden, its greene tufts often in abundance. Unpleasant to eat, so best left to the creatures who truly enjoy it.
Twisted Gold
Also known as the Honeycombe Fungus, this shroome is delicious in savory treats. Found growing across the lowlands all year round.
Blue Void
Believed haunted by some, beware the Blue Void shroome found beneath leaves of Ochre.
Amaranthine Treasure
Treasure indeed, these amaranthine berries are both sweet and tart. Growes across Glimmerwick in the summer months, adored by both humans and creatures.
Belated Hellebore
Found to produce most unpleasant effects when consumed. Take care it is not eaten by witch or wildlife. Instead, may be arranged around ones cauldron to enhance brewing purity.
Tail of the Fish
Greene and with the jagged appearance of spikes. Growes most heartily atop mountains and other such peaks. When bitten it releases a sensation of coldness resembling that of a fish fresh from the sea.
Mote in a Verdant Dawn
Rumoured to wander the mountains in the hours before sunrise, their resplendent purple motes almost sparkle amongst verdant leaves. An intense flavor and delightful aroma invites all to try it.
Golden Tipped Peril
Sour and crisp, the leaves of this plant can be used in cooking. Found amongst the forests of Ochre, but fair warning, this plant is not to be eaten in large quantities.
Sharpe Delight
While the stalk is a treat for the tastebuds, indeed both sharpe and delightful, the deep greene leaves are toxic. Easily growne in cottage gardens.

A Naturalist's Guide
----------------------------------------
Florian Fitzwell and …
Stony Spine
----------------
A terribly mundane creature, its spines are deceptively soft and incapable of causing damage. They are entirely miserable at swimming and instead creep along the riverbed similar to sea slugs.
Spectral Eel
----------------
Emits an otherworldly glow and uses a series of eerie hums to attract prey. Some believe that seeing one in the wild is a sign that a ghost is attempting to make contact with you.
Saltwater Harp
----------------
A regal fish with ties to Merfolk Nobility and folklore. One such tale recounts the Saltwater Harp who became bard to the Queen of the 8th Depth, and played a song so beautiful that the queen wept until an entire new sea was formed - The Opal Waters.
Jelly Bell
----------------
While it's twinkling bells are lovely alone, once the Jelly Bells have swarmed together in the thousands, the sound becomes deafening. Jelly Bells swarm in seemingly random locations which have lead to unplanned seasonal migrations for local merfolk.
Brinebelly
----------------
Actually a miniature whale, brinebellies are mammals that travel in pods of 10-20. They communicate through underwater song and are able to use simple magic to defend themselves and create ideal habitats wherever they go.
Golden Trill
----------------
A common local symbol of love - it's believed that if a couple spots a pair of Golden Trills while swimming together they are destined to stay in love forever. However, seeing just one fish means the relationship is likely doomed. The fish mate for life and are extremely social.
Inky Puffer
----------------
The puffer surrounds itself with an inky mucous that makes it's body appear much larger. Without the ink layer the puffer is on average only about a quarter the size of it's appearance. Though some puffers have been documented with an ink barrier up to 10 times their body size.
Bubblehead
----------------
Although it has a large cranial cavity, it possesses the smallest brain of all fish on Glimmerwick. However, size is not everything as it's brain is extremely dense and the fish has been documented to possess lifelong memory and has the ability to raise and even herd smaller fish it consumes.
Merman's Folly
----------------
Highly toxic barbs cause paralysis and necrosis of limbs. They are however considered a delicacy in Merfolk cuisine and many risk life and limb to enjoy the fine dining.
Murkwater Vampire
----------------
Prefers the depths of the sea as its habitat. Its eyes have adapted to see in total darkness. The vampire name is a misnomer - its sharp teeth are used to filter out larger fish it cannot consume. Many ancient folktales indicate that the fish was once known as the Vampire's Supper - a meal approved for consumption during vampiric fasting periods.
River Pixie
----------------
Pixies have been witnessed lounging on the riverbanks and are capable of living outside water for up to a full day. Though they cannot truly fly, they can leap great distances out of the water. They are believed to be a common ancestor of all dragons.
Royal Trout
----------------
Dubbed as such due to its coral crownlike headpiece. The coral grows over the trout's lifetime which can be several hundred years. The largest documented Royal Trout measured 31 paces long with a crown 15 paces tall.
Yodeling Catfish
----------------
Named after its unique call performed above water. Though long believed to be entirely solitary and anti-social fish, it has since been shown that the yodels are used to communicate and they do indeed keep in touch with specific fish and have different yodels when meeting strange catfish.
Sunray Salmon
----------------
A glorious, shimmering fish which resides in mountain streams. It has the ability to hibernate in frozen water and while no one is sure what these fish consume, they seem to gain strength from the sunlight which is easily visible in the clear waters of the Shifting Spires.
Botany Book
Herbotany classes start this week! Students will learn the ins and outs of plant life both magical and mundane. Class will be held on Thursday of this week. The herbotany classroom is located in the east wing of the castle. No special supplies needed!
Cozy Cooking Basics

Every kitchen witch knows there is no stronger or more reliable spell than one cast in food. However, an enchanted meal that tastes of rot will be of no more use than ants in the kitchen.
Therefore the basics of baking should be studied closely. It's not hard for those who wish to learn.
Take a good flour from the miller and mix well with potable water. Be sure the water is clean and not from the sea. Mix well to make a dough.
Leave plain or mix in another ingredient if you wish and bake in a strong fire until done.
The following ingredients are fond favorites, but nearly anything can be added to improve your dough.
Basil - makes an Herby Dough
Nettle - makes a Forest Dough
Morel - makes a Mushroom Dough.
Good luck on your baking journey.

Eseld's Folly
Eseld's Folly
Eseld roamed carefree through the forest until she discovered the circle of mushrooms next to an ancient oak tree. Her uncle once tried to convince her fairies would trap people inside if disturbed by dancing, but surely this was foolish talk. Eager to prove him wrong, Eseld jumped into the center and began to sway and twirl.
Whispers of a haunting melody wound its way into her head, its tendrils urging her to dance. A chill spread through her body as movement took over; she'd made a terrible mistake. "Help, I need assistance to stop, I fear that I'm about to drop."
Several tiring hours passed before someone approached. Dressed in a long green cloak decorated with leaves and acorns, they looked a part of the forest. "You danced inside a fairy ring," they said, a judgemental fact. "Fairies hate that."
I didn't know. Please, please, help me. Do you know how to set me free? Eseld said, holding back new tears.
The stranger sighed. "You're lucky I heard you. I've come prepared." They reached into a deep pocket and brought out a potion. "A tincture of equal parts marjoram and thyme, to befuddle the fairies."
Eseld watched as they poured the potion onto the circle edge.
"I'm Lowen, by the way." Lowen reached again into their pocket. "Five chamomile flowers, to appease them." They placed them by the circle, and Eseld watched as the ground swallowed the flowers.
"And finally," the stranger lifted what Eseld had assumed was a walking stick, "iron to cross the circle and break the spell."
As the metal touched Eseld's side, relief fell over her as she was released from the spell. The urge to dance dissipated, and she jumped out of the circle straight into Lowen's arms.
"Thank you Lowen," said Eseld, giving them a grateful hug.

Habitats

Briar Fox
These creatures make their home in the Bellian Moor. They are great caretakers and often attempt to care for small rodents and other vermin, though the vermin are more likely to be scared away.
Woodland Dragon
These pygmy dragons make their home deep in the Ochre Woods, most often found east of the lake. A mycological marvel - when a Woodland Dragon consumes a mushroom, that specific fungus grows bountifully in the surrounding area.
Griffin
A ground-nesting creature that resides primarily near standing water in the Cypress Foothills. Once befriended these marvelous beasts may decide to transport their human by flight for short distances across the island.
Leafkin Book
- Attached to the quest Winter Practical
- Given by
Clover - Item page →
Rooted within the lands of Glimmerwick rest the magnificent giants known as Leafkin. Hundreds of thousands of years old, these incredible beings have a sense of time that cannot relate to our own. Spending decades at rest, they are often completely oblivious to the surrounding development and advancement of human society; often to their own detriment. Since time immemorial witches have taken it upon themselves to ensure the Leafkin of our islands are kept healthy, strong, and protected during their slumbers.
A once common tradition involved visiting Leafkin on a full moon and pouring a simple tonic of root strengthener or bark thickener as an offering to the Leafkin. It was believed the Leafkin would grant a blessing to the witch making the offering. Though the practice is less common now, conservationists still provide such tinctures to ensure the beings remain hale.
The following is an example of such a root strengthener tonic:
1 Bundle of bones, 1 Ruby Bell, 2 Frostleaf, all mixed well in a cauldron.
In years past it was considered bad luck to wake a sleeping Leafkin (though incredibly difficult to do so). However, with the influx of spores in the region, it is now considered necessary to rouse them from naps so as to take inventory of their health and overall well-being. The standard method is with the Spell of Awakening (included in appendix).
Before laying roots young Leafkin have the ability to walk and live much like humans. There is currently one unrooted Leafkin (300 years old at time of publication) on the island. There are four documented rooted Leafkin on the island, though the location of one has been lost to time, and while the remaining Leafkin are in contact with him, his location has not be successfully communicated to researchers.

Though moles are quite private creatures I have had the remarkable fortune to befriend one. Though the language barrier proved a hurdle, we did grow quite fond of one another and I eventually managed to decipher a bit of the Molish language. However, it has always been my belief that a human can never fully understand the intricate lives of moles - which has lead me to develop the following potion, and publish it here for use by others who strive to live a life as mole-like as possible.

Game bug: this text is painted into the page art in English, so the game shows it in English in every language. A translated version exists in the files but is never used.
Long, long ago the River Dragon and the Reed Crane were best of friends. Each morning they met by the shore to sing the day away. When the River Dragon sang, insects sprung up from the earth and the River Crane ate them for lunch. When the Crane sang, Kelpwing flowers blossomed from lilypads, and the Dragon munched them for dinner.
So it went until one early morning Crane went down to the lake to wait for Dragon. While waiting he tried to sing, but found his voice was gone. In embarrassment he flew away. Dragon waited all day for his friend - and the next and the next. When it was clear Crane was gone Dragon dove down deep into the lake - never to be seen again.

Ragglewort and Its Uses
Ragglewort is a small brown plant which could be said to resemble a rat with roots. The leaves are weirdly furry looking, but are prickly to the touch. Everyone should avoid touching Ragglewort, but if they do accidentally touch it they should immidiately soak their hand (or whatever they touched it with) in water that was collected at midnight during full moon. If you don't do this you can expect terrible things to happen to the skin, so really just avoid it.
After boiling the leaves they are safe to touch. Then they can be ground up and used in potions. Such as: cures for pulled muscles, inducing a growth spurt, and speeding up recovery from broken bones. A lot of elder people drink a ragglewort brew every day.
When preparing ragglewort always wear gloves with at least 2 layers of charm protection. Boil the entire plant for 15 minutes then let dry on a cooling rack. Pluck off the leaves and store them in a glass jar. Throw out the rest of the plant. Use for all your bone healing endevors for up to four weeks!

Nettleine Pamphlet
It is said that Nettleine is our savior - that her inferno rescued us from untold disaster. This is not the whole truth. Don't let yourselves be blinded again.
Ask yourselves, why was the fire extinguished? Why was the forest left in frailty to rot? Wicked seeds have been sown for an eternity of Silence and a weakened forest is worse than an ashen one. Spores have seeped into the roots and fall from the leaves, corrupting the air with poison. Clearly this was by design. By 'saving' the woods from fire, they have positioned us to be DESTROYED by rot! Silencers do not sleep - do not die.
Nettleine set the woods ablaze, and the time has come for us to finish her great task!
Silence is coming - let us burn it before it burns us!
Plants of the Western Isles

Gobbling Bluebells are a flower tuber species native to the Western Isles. A healthy plant is known to consume berries, flowers, and other simple plants. However, this is not how they got their name. The 'gobbling' descriptor is derived from a phenomenon in which the plant frantically consumes all manner of objects not limited to: buildings, rocks, trees, and in some cases birds and other small animals. This ceaseless consumption is brought about by a very rare disease, called Munchitis. Though highly destructive if not dealt with, it is easily treated with the following potion.
Munchitis Treatment
• 2x spring tubers
• salt pile
• mussel shell

It was great to hear from you. My work has been busy lately - we’re rebuilding a community of swamp eels right now. It’s not the most glamorous work - it’s actually pretty gross. And while I do theoretically love all creatures, I’m still working on my soft spot for these ones. But once the community is healthily established we’ll reintroduce dusk bears to the area. They live off the eels and are nearly extinct due to the lack of food. Once the bears move in and begin eating these eels I’m sure it will all be worth it! This is a sketch I did of the very first bear that will call this place home. His name is Blueberry.
Catch up more at the celebration!

Return From the Depths:
Bold Adventures in Mycology
I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with Codrin Verde about his many adventures seeking rare mushrooms.
"I'm sure you’ve heard about the 4 years I was trapped in the mycological caves of the Obsidian Depths - well, that can really disturb your mind. After getting out I could hardly stand to be around people anymore... and I believed I could speak to fungi. It took many months to recover from that.
"Since then I've shifted to studying algae. It sounded safer at first, but the one that most calls to me is the assimilating green marimo. They attempt to turn everyone and everything into algae. Well, they have tried,” here Codrin holds up his green tinged fingers, “but they haven't gotten me yet!"

Mary got all the flower samples last week and somehow every single bouquet molded overnight. She’s too embarrassed to ask for new samples, so I think she’s just going to have to go with weeds - unless you’re interested in coming up with something more resilient that can withstand Mary’s general presence. Just wait until you’ve seen the dress though - Clover did an outstanding job!

I decided to change my path and I’ve been working on sustainable etching. Essentially making devices that can perform a variety of spells without actual music being played. My sister and I have been implementing them across the islands with incredible success. I wanted to gift this one to you - as a thank you for helping me realize there is more than one path to success.

Dreadful night. Ivarice's fixation on that moonstone was nothing short of obsessive - and now it's got him killed. Our attempt to lift it was cursed from the start - even the trees conspired against him! The whole guild was there. Lou said an old ash snapped in two - easy as a twig - and fell right down upon his head. How lost we'll be without Iv - he was our heart and soul.
I stopped caring for notes, after Ivarice. Nothing's been the same - most of the old guild has gone. A couple caught. A couple out on their own. Some of us got to thinking about the moonstone again. Pay a tribute to Iv and maybe get a little gold to set us up for a while.
Great gods alive, who would have known the Marywild cottage is cursed by the cruelest spirits known to the islands. Not a one of us could lay foot in the house without incurring terrible shrieks like none heard in this life. Some of the crew are talking about banishing the wretched thing away. The stone will be worth it, that much is sure.
Finally we have the moonstone in hand! We bested the foul spirit in a manner that would have made Ivarice proud. Lou drafted the banishing curse, but she has no idea where we sent the beast. How I wish Iv had been there to see it - and to see the moonstone.
The blasted stone isn't worth a single scrap of gold because it's been charmed and no one can even speak a word about selling it! Wretched thing! We're leaving it behind - where silver turns to gold.

I cant wait for you to see her in real life and also I miss you!!! Let's go swimming at the lake every day when you get home.

Though moles are quite private creatures I have had the remarkable fortune to befriend one. Though the language barrier proved a hurdle, we did grow quite fond of one another and I eventually managed to decipher a bit of the Molish language. However, it has always been my belief that a human can never fully understand the intricate lives of moles - which has lead me to develop the following potion, and publish it here for use by others who strive to live an authentically moley life.

River Dragons of Glimmerwick:
A Study of Reptillian Diversity
in the Yennish Ages
The name "River Dragon" is a misnomer in that several species of these beasts preferred to live in the still waters of deep lakes. Numerous fossils have been found in and around the Ochre Lake.
One such species, the Driftwood Serpent, had a symbiotic relationship with Lazuline Cranes. The dragons' hums called up insects which the cranes fed on. The birds' songs aided the growth of Lakedew Lily - what is believed to have been the primary food of Driftwood Serpents. According to ancient artworks it could be surmised that the eggs of these dragons could not hatch without an abundance of lakedew lily growing nearby.
Long, long ago the River Dragon and the Lazuline Crane were best of friends. Each morning they met by the shore to sing the day away. When the River Dragon sang, insects sprung up from the earth and the Crane ate them for lunch. When the Crane sang, Lakedew lillies blossomed from giant leves, and the Dragon munched them for dinner.
Dear …
Meet me in my office to discuss the end of your first year, and the beginning of your internship.

A ground-nesting creature that resides primarily in the Nocturne Forest. Once befriended these marvelous beasts may decide to transport their human by flight for short distances across the island.
Snapper
These creatures hide within pink ridges that snap amidst the deep ocean, though they are oft found washed up upon the golden beaches of Glimmerwick.
I've finally found the connection - the spores, the harp, the silence - it's all one and the same. Music has been becoming weaker - we thought it was just loss of practice, or maybe active suppression hexes from the Silence. But no - they're losing their power too. And it's the spores. The spores are out of control lately - they fill the Etchery, fill the fields, our bread or water is all contaminated. Purging magic from everything. And the Silence knows this - they knew about the spores and they cultivated them in the woods. Now we're suffocating in them!
But I know what to do - the harp and the song are all I need, and I can take out this fungus. I'm going tonight.
