Rooted within the lands of Glimmerwick rest the magnificent giants known as Leafkin. Hundreds of thousands of years old, these incredible beings have a sense of time that cannot relate to our own. Spending decades at rest, they are often completely oblivious to the surrounding development and advancement of human society; often to their own detriment. Since time immemorial witches have taken it upon themselves to ensure the Leafkin of our islands are kept healthy, strong, and protected during their slumbers.
A once common tradition involved visiting Leafkin on a full moon and pouring a simple tonic of root strengthener or bark thickener as an offering to the Leafkin. It was believed the Leafkin would grant a blessing to the witch making the offering. Though the practice is less common now, conservationists still provide such tinctures to ensure the beings remain hale.

The following is an example of such a root strengthener tonic:
1 Bundle of bones, 1 Ruby Bell, 2 Frostleaf, all mixed well in a cauldron.
In years past it was considered bad luck to wake a sleeping Leafkin (though incredibly difficult to do so). However, with the influx of spores in the region, it is now considered necessary to rouse them from naps so as to take inventory of their health and overall well-being. The standard method is with the Spell of Awakening (included in appendix).
Before laying roots young Leafkin have the ability to walk and live much like humans. There is currently one unrooted Leafkin (300 years old at time of publication) on the island. There are four documented rooted Leafkin on the island, though the location of one has been lost to time, and while the remaining Leafkin are in contact with him, his location has not be successfully communicated to researchers.
